[Columbia, S.C. – December 22, 2022] The Columbia Urban League (CULSC) is committed to changing lives daily and especially through the holiday season. For 55 years, CULSC has sponsored an annual Christmas Giving program, currently referred to as the Beatrice McKnight Christmas Giving Project. CULSC will provide 150 prepared meals to underserved elderly families. Menu items include turkey, green bean casserole, dressing, and other nutritious items. CULSC President and CEO James T. McLawhorn said the organization expanded its annual program this year because of the adverse impact of inflation on food prices and the overall quality of life.

“This is a very challenging year for many seniors who have historically suffered from food insecurities, compounded by the escalating inflation that has increased the cost of basic food items beyond the reach of many seniors,” McLawhorn said. “Additionally, many seniors living alone feel isolated, when countless others are gathering with family and friends.”

“This year, CULSC will expand prepared meals for those seniors who may not have the luxury of family and friends assisting in the preparation of food.” CULSC partnered with Columbia Housing Authority to identify seniors residing in public housing and prepared meals will be hand delivered to them at Oak Read Highrise, 2211 Read Street in Columbia by CULSC staff along with some of this year’s sponsors on Thursday, December 22 nd at 11:00am.

The CULSC’s annual Beatrice McKnight Christmas Giving Project named in 2012 in memory of the late CULSC former employee, civil rights activist, and advocate for low-income seniors.

“We are grateful for the generosity of our presenting sponsors – PRIMSA Health and Absolute Total Care. In addition to these presenting sponsors, we appreciate the support of other event sponsors Humana, Walmart, Publix Supermarket, Pepsi, along with generous supporters, and volunteers,” McLawhorn said.
