BEATRICE MCKNIGHT CHRISTMAS GIVING PROJECT
We are all aware of the devastating impact of poverty on our youth and elderly. According to AARP, South Carolina ranks as one of the worst states in the country for senior nutrition, with a ranking of 48th for food insecurity for adults 60 and older. In addition, America’s Health Ranking noted that the rate of food insecurity has declined across the country except for South Carolina. This ranking puts South Carolina as 46th in the country.
Also, many of our adolescents are faced with food insecurity which is much more severe during the holiday season when they are out of school. For many low-income students, the school free lunch program provides their only daily nutritional meals. Feed America ranks South Carolina Child Food Security at 28%.
To combat South Carolina’s food insecurity (hunger), our Christmas Giving program will provide 350 nutritional food baskets to needy elderly families and 125 nutritional food packs to disadvantaged youth.
